“Thou shalt not commit adultery.” Exodus 20:14
A preacher, I like listening to, presented
this philosophy, ‘if we want to know what God expects study the pattern set in
the first three chapters of Genesis’ (words to that effect). Because our goal
is restoration to our Eden home this is an excellent plan. What then, is
adultery? Based on scriptural descriptions, adultery covers all sexual activity
outside the bonds of marriage (Leviticus 18; John 8:2-11). So then, what is
marriage? Well, utilizing the above principle, Genesis 2:18-25 describes marriage
as a covenant made before God and our community between one man and one woman.
Any relationship outside of this covenant is not marriage; and therefore, any
sexual activity outside of this bond is adultery.
Adultery, however, is not limited to
physical acts with inappropriate partners; Jesus taught that the thoughts that
lead to those acts also bring condemnation (Matthew 5:27, 28). Because we are
visual creatures it is of the utmost importance that we make wise choices in
our chosen visual stimuli. Our entertainment choices need to foster positive
thoughts and not base, lustful imaginations. But what about the views we don’t
choose, the brothers and sisters, who dress provocatively? As individuals it is
our duty to take Joseph’s example and avoid such temptations, by any means
necessary (Genesis 39:7-12). As conscientious Christians who are dedicated
keepers of our brethren, it is our responsibility not to dress in a way that
feeds lustful thoughts.
An active prayer and devotional life
founded in unflinching faith in the Father and the sacrifice of Jesus will
bring about the change necessary (Romans 4:19-22; 1 Thessalonians 5:16-22).
Many believe that because they have certain feelings and inclinations that this
must be of God. We can never forget that we live in a world tainted by sin, and
sin manifests in varying desires that oppose God’s direct law (Psalms 51:5; Romans
8:7; 1 Timothy 1:10). A determination in our will and faith in God’s promise to
strengthen us to adhere to His commandments, will give us the ability to
overcome the strongest proclivity to sin (Isaiah 50:7; Philippians 1:6; 4:13).
